چکیده

In this paper we present a cutting plane algorithm for the Set Covering problem. Cutting planes are generated by a “general” (i.e. not based on the “template paradigm”) separation algorithm based on the following idea: i) identify a suitably small subproblem defined by a subset of the constraints of the formulation; ii) run an exact separation algorithm over the subproblem to produce a violated cutting plane, if any exists. Computational results on difficult small-medium size instances are reported.

Set covering algorithms using cutting planes, heuristics, and subgradient optimization : a computational study

We report on the implementation and computational testing of several versions of a set covering algorithm, based on the family of cutting planes from conditional bounds discussed in the companion paper [2]. The algorithm uses a set of heuristics to find prime covers, another set of heuristics to find feasible solutions to the dual linear program which are needed to generate cuts, and subgradien...

On Disjunctive Cuts for Combinatorial Optimization

In the successful branch-and-cut approach to combinatorial optimization, linear inequalities are used as cutting planes within a branch-and-bound framework. Although researchers often prefer to use facet-inducing inequalities as cutting planes, good computational results have recently been obtained using disjunctive cuts, which are not guaranteed to be facet-inducing in general. A partial expla...

Cutting planes from conditional bounds : a new approach to set covering

A conditional lower bound on the minimand of an integer program is a number which would be a valid lower bound if the constraint set were amended by certain inequalities, also called conditional. If such a conditional lower bound exceeds some known upper bound, then every solution better than the one corresponding to the upper bound violates at least one of the conditional inequalities. This yi...

Polyhedral combinatorics: An annotated bibliography

The system Bx b is said to describe P , and each hyperplane fx 2 IR : B i x = big is called a cutting plane. One of the central questions in polyhedral combinatorics is to nd the cutting planes that describe P . This question is the subject of this chapter. We start with a section on books and collections of survey articles that treat polyhedral combinatorics in detail. x2 on integer programmin...

The Intersection of Knapsack Polyhedra and Extensions

This paper introduces a scheme of deriving strong cutting planes for a general integer programming problem. The scheme is related to Chvatal-Gomory cutting planes and important special cases such as odd hole and clique inequalities for the stable set polyhedron or families of inequalities for the knapsack polyhedron. We analyze how relations between covering and incomparability numbers associat...
